Follow The Leader To Your Success: The Importance Of Working With A Mentor
Posted by Heather Taskovics · 22 Comments
While listening to a daily motivational call for the network marketing team I’m with, the team leader brought up the subject of how to deal with problems by working with a mentor. He said that a true leader is not expected to solve all the problems of the world by himself–he needs to incorporate the help of an experienced mentor who has been *through it all* so-to-speak. And he is absolutely right!
Why Have A Mentor?
As a new network marketer, you are not expected to go at it all by yourself. In order to become successful in the industry, it is vital that you team up with a mentor–either a leader from your upline or someone else whom you admire and trust who is an experienced and successful network marketer. Even the most seasoned of network marketers enlist the help of a highly-knowledgeable mentor now and again.
What Does A Mentor Do?
A mentor is a leader who serves as counselor and teacher when you need it. They can instruct you on helpful tips and techniques that can be applied toward your business. A mentor can relate to just about everything that you are going through, because they have experienced the same situations themselves and are best able to provide advice on how to handle certain situations–be it connecting with prospects for the first time, recommending the best way to stay focused, or even how to mentor your own team of leaders.
Keep in mind, however, that a mentor is not there to *hold your hand*–rather, they will act more as a guide on your path to creating a successful business. A good mentor will provide the support that enables you to think for yourself and take initiative. He or she will encourage you to move forward–especially when things aren’t going so well.
Finding A Mentor
Establishing a connection with a mentor who will benefit you is just like starting any relationship. You may not necessarily find someone right away–it may take some trial and error. It may very well be someone in your upline or it could be someone you have hired to help you. Many mentors and success coaches provide complimentary first-time sessions; I highly recommend going this route in order to find the right fit with someone. Once you find the person with whom you feel comfortable and a sense of rapport, you will have access to an extremely valuable resource that is worth its weight in gold.
Throughout the life of your business, it’s highly likely that you will find that you connect with more than one mentor. Again, like with any relationship, various mentors will come in and out of your life to serve a purpose that is required of you. Once they have served that purpose, they will move on and another one will appear to provide guidance for what you need at that time.
If you are interested in working with a success coach, I provide free consultations in order to establish what it is you truly need to reach your desired goals and attain maximum success with your business. You may email me at contact@heathertaskovics.net or via phone at 781.475.0936.

Heather,
I really enjoyed this post, and having a mentor of some sort is very good advice. I think sometimes people try to do so much on their own, but having relationships is what keeps us sane too!
All the best,
Erika

Hey Heather! Truly enjoyed this post! I am right in align with you girl! I actually did a post recently on how YOU choose your Mentor, they do not choose you. It really is crucial to your success in this industry to find someone not only that you can learn from but someone who will be a true guide along your journey.
Thanks for the great post and layout… you will definitely help many with this one girl!

@Keith: So very true!
About mentors and coaches. I think they can be very helpful (and necessary). But time-wise there’s the ying and the yang. I save some time in getting things straightened out, but I lose time when I think my coach has “uninformed spots” and takes more of my valuable time and precious funds when I might have worked things out by myself. . . .Mind you, I don’t want to be a loner. I do want to work with people. But I find when I need something to boost me over some hump, and my coach doesn’t have an appointment for a week I feel the overwhelm–which is what I wanted to avoid by having a coach. And then there are disadvantages in having a friend for a coach, I think.

@Lottie Jenvey: Sometimes you can find a mentor right away with whom you feel an instant rapport–oftentimes, you may need to *interview* some before you find one you want to invest your time and finances with. It is normal to work with a few different different coaches before you find one that a.) feels right to you and b.) will not monopolize your valuable time–instead they will guide you on how to make the most of your time and resources (your mentor also being a resource, mind you) and become more effective.
Hi Heather,
great post about the importance of mentoring. We can’t do it alone in MLM Network Marketing, it’s a team sports. So it’s to have partners who are already there where you want to go – a mentor.
Thanks for sharing.
Take care

Hi Heather,
Another fabulous post! Mentors are so important, without them we would all be reinventing the wheel and not getting very far. With mentors, we get the wheel, how to mount it on our vehicle, keep it lubricated and rolling down the road.
About the only thing more important is don’t forget to start your business! Without starting you can’t grow.
All the best,
Alan
@Antonio Licchelli: Thank you so much! I really appreciate the kind comment.
Hi Heather
Having a mentor (or mentors) is arguably the best business investment one can make…
Great article – well done.

Hey Cool blog.

Heather,
A great overview of Mentoring and it benefits. It’s always a good idea to connect with people who you wish to emulate. Follow their steps to save yourself from some of the pitfalls they experienced.
Thanks for sharing this info with us,
Val
@Val – Exactly! The learning curve is always easier to handle when you study with an experienced mentor. Eventually, you will figure out what does or does not work for you–at that point, you can pass on your wealth of knowledge and experience on to others.
That learning curve can be daunting for sure. Look perhaps to the mentor and the mentor’s mentors. Might take a keen bit of looking inward as well

Hi Heather, this is something I wish I had done a long time ago. I have just signed up for a mentoring program and am really looking forward to it. For a long time I thought it was something I just couldn’t afford. But seeing how much money I wasted in the mean time I realise it is more something I couldn’t afford not to do.
That is fantastic, Rowena! You are going to be so grateful that you signed up for the program. Keep me posted on how it goes.
