Don't Spam On Me! (A Social Media Etiquette Lesson)
Posted by Heather Taskovics · 15 Comments
“Hey there, thanks for being my friend! Check out this fantastic opportunity that is going to make you a GAZILLIONAIRE in a matter of weeks! Blah, blah blah…”
You’ve probably seen similar messages like this flooding your Facebook inbox, Twitter messages, and even your Skype conversations. These are people who have been taught by certain so-called *gurus* that all they need to do to get people to sign on for their opportunity/products/services is to post their ads everywhere they can…especially on social media sites.
This video below explains…
So remember: Make connections with people before deciding to promote your product. Learn what makes them tick–what their needs, desires, likes, dislikes are. It may take add a little more time in growing your business, but in the end, it will definitely be worth it.
And in the long run, you may actually acquire some lasting friendships in the process.
As always, I’d love to know what you think about this subject. How do you deal with all the spammers who inundate you with their *latest and greatest* on social media outlets? Have you ever *converted* a former spammer? Perhaps you are a *recovering spammer*. Tell me your tales and share your insights in the space provided below.
And if you know of someone near and dear to you who would appreciate this post, go ahead and share it on your Facebook wall or Tweet it to the world!
Thank you so much!
Until next time…

Heather,
The strange thing is I once was one! I would go about pitching my opportunity to anybody with a heartbeat because that’s how I was taught. If your placed in the wrong circle of business it is very hard to get out and see how it should be done properly, even though you may not be happy doing it.
Maybe we should create a group around this topic and share free tips on how to avoid the deadly mistakes that can ruin a person’s reputation?
All it would take is a few of us to become admin and publish content around this topic.
Luckily enough now I have the skills, mindset and determination to think like a leader.
And we all have that resource readily available to us.
Let’s share it to everone we know.
Thank you for this post because it has made me realise just how far I have come personally.
Thanks Heather awsome yet again
Heather, very well said, spammers are becoming a real problem and I hope that I would never do the things that they do to try and promote their business. Really enjoyed the vide.
Thanks
Lori
Hi Heather, thanks for the great post.
I don’t defriend spammers, but I do hide their feeds. My hope is that this way they will see some of the great posts by my friends who are doing things the right way. I’ll be sure to share this great message. This reminds me, I must check from time to time to see if they’ve learnt the right way yet so I can unhide their feeds.
@Rowena – we can only hope that the spammers get the subtle hint. Sometimes, however, it takes the proverbial 2X4 upside the back of the head for many to wake up and realize what they are doing.
Heather
Hi Heather,
Isn’t that the difference between attraction marketing and repulsion marketing?
All I ever want to do is ignore them and that’s what I usually do. I figure if people aren’t asking me what I do, I’m doing something wrong.
Great post!
All the best,
Alan
@Alan – thanks so much for stopping by! I totally know what you mean. But when, you put yourself in the shoes of the spammer, you almost feel sorry for them because they really don’t know any better. Or they do and they just don’t care…but I’m willing to believe the former over the latter.
Thanks again!
Heather
Hi Heather and to all the readers of this site. hope all is well. Denise Benson talks about you very often and refers me to watch your videos and read your content. I am happy that the two of you are connected. I know, I have not been in touch in a while; we both are busy as I am sure; but just a randomly hello and how are you is definitely an appropriate step in building relationships. There is no cost to build business and occasional social relationships on the Net. Please accept my sincere hello to a wonderful person that I have the opportunity to connect with. Thank you for being my associate and/or friend as we move forward to secure a friendship.
I agree 100% of what you said in your video; more folks really need to see it especially spammers. OMG, you hit the nail on the head. It is so on queue about spammers and can’t be emphasized enough. I surely look forward to spreading that same message around or sending the spammers to your video. Thank you, Denise, for continuously keeping me updated with Heather’s content.
Heather, I love your site and content. Your websites will definitely be reference points in my website developments as I move forward to stress how important it is to build relationships first. If you are sincere, the money will follow without even having to put focus on it.
Well stay in touch on Skype and any other way that is established for communicating. **Hugs** to a very savvy person known as Heather
@Pat – thank you so much.
Hi Heather,
I agree and believe that relationship building is very important before trying to sell anything to anyone. Unfortunately, I like many others have been taught the opposite. I find that when I give people a chance to get to know me, and in turn build relationships with them, they stick around much longer.
As a newbie in the social media scene, this tip is amongst one of the best! Will definitely share this with others.
Thanks as always!:-)
Denise
That post was great and all but you oughta really look at getting into business with us on the ground floor.
I like the advice that follows the guidelines of dating and meeting people in bars. Are you sure you want to go home with them before having a few casual dates. Some people are network marketing HOs! ;0)
Hi Heather.
Lucky we found Katie, eh, because this is almost a mantra for her.
“Give value” “Don’t promote your opportunity”
Here on UT, these messages become ingrained in our psyche but, as you wisely point out, for most people out there it’s a completely alien concept.
I like your compassion when you accept these people are probably ‘newbies’ and it is more constructive to retain them as friends and, hopefully, teach them by example that there is a more socially acceptable way of building a business.
The temptation, of course, is to spam them back. I’ve done that before with telesales calls when I asked if they’d like my opportunity. They soon put the phone down but it’s not really clever!
The sites that are designed for people to promote their opportunity are, as you say, acceptable but, as I’m sure everyone on here is aware, they are a complete waste of time as everyone who use them are completely self-serving. They are all promoting their own opportunity and have no interest in anyone else’s so, consequently, no-one actually generates any leads from these places.
Makes you realise how fortunate we are to have discovered, and be part of, this wonderful and unique community that is Unified Tribe and to have connections with like-minded mentors such as Katie, Jonathan Budd, Mike Klingler, Mike Dillard, Ann Sieg etc.
All people who have discovered the power of giving abundantly before any expectation.
All the best to you
Steve
@Steve – We are very fortunate, indeed, to be connected with so many amazing mentors.
LOL – I’ve actually spammed a spammer before–was getting fed up with receiving the emails, so I responded with an ad for one of my own opportunities. Never got a reply back (I wonder why…?).
Thank you so much for taking the time to respond in such an eloquent manner. I truly appreciate your contribution.
Cheers!
Heather
now I have tried that to Heather… only to get another can-o-spam in return! Some are hard head but some truly are excited lost little sheep. And I for one am still learning, too.

Heather,
Excellent post.
This kind of lunacy will be the trigger for Facebook, Twitter, etc to eventually ban all network marketers if we don’t act now to weed out this self-defeating, mindless stupidity.
John
@John – If we take action on this NOW, hopefully it won’t get to that point. Thanks so much for your support…I really appreciate it!
