Finding Meaningful Purpose In Life: Embracing a Cause

“This is the true joy in life, the being used for a purpose recognized by yourself as a mighty one; the being thoroughly worn out before you are thrown on the scrap heap; the being a force of Nature instead of a feverish, selfish little clod of ailments and grievances, complaining that the world will not devote itself to making you happy.” ~George Bernard Shaw

I recently posted this quote on my Facebook page–the words have been resonating through me ever since I first laid eyes upon them.  George Bernard Shaw reminds us to become the masters of our own happiness and fulfillment, by embracing that which is bigger than any one person…to devote ourselves to contributing our energy to that which is outside our personal wants, needs and desires.

One of the many ways that you can *Live, Life Loud* and add personal value to your life is by finding purpose in a special cause that you believe in and become proactive in it.

To find a cause is to find something that stirs the mind, body and soul into action–that inspires one to create a positive change in the world that benefits all.   It could be saving the whales, feeding the hungry, clothing the poor, teaching and  empowering others to create a better existence for themselves, or taking action to persuade the leaders of the world to make decisions that are for the good of every human being on the planet.

When we invest the time into focusing and acting upon the needs of others, a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction is realized.  We also give ourselves a well-deserved break from the self-centered, ego-driven goals that typically rule our everyday lives–and in by doing so, we find more gratification doing the things that we love to do for ourselves; in our jobs, businesses, hobbies and daily interactions with others.

At the same time, in giving OF ourselves, we are also giving TO ourselves–and by this, I mean that we give ourselves that wonderful gift of compassion and a sense of purpose.  We start to empathize with others and understand exactly what is going on outside of our personal space bubbles.  It makes us feel happy to know that we’ve made an effective difference in the lives of others and the world around us.

It just does something good for the soul.

So take the time to think about what types of causes feel near and dear to your heart that you would be willing to dedicate some of your time to and figure out how to make it happen.  Volunteer at a food pantry and help feed meals to the homeless, befriend your elderly neighbor who lives alone, work at an animal rescue shelter, clean those beaches or rally to stop the inhumane conditions at a factory in another country.  Even the simple act of performing random acts of kindness can make a huge positive effect.  The possibilities are indeed endless…

As always, I value your contributions to these posts, so please leave your comments in the section provided below.

Until next time…

Namaste,

  1. Thank you Heather for this inspiring post. Having a purpose greater than ourselves definately makes it easier to see how unimportant our minor struggles are and gives purpose to life. Since starting online I’ve met so many wonderful people who are passionate about helping others. Its also great to see many MLM companies incorporating philanthropy in their businesses so people can help change the world while helping themselves.

Love this concept. It’s what my message/mission/blog is all about, albeit applied to a very specific context (freelance writing). Will go and share now :)

  3. Heather,

    Fantastic post.

I could not agree more on supporting a cause. There is no better way to give your life meaning…especially if your cause is to uplift in humanitarian efforts. Haiti comes to mind.

When you come from a place of volunteering your efforts in a display of compassion, there is no faster way to fulfillment, I promise you that because I’ve been there and I’ve done it.

My earnest desire is that more people develop a craving to show humanitarian compassion in the neediest of causes.

Thanks for sharing this post and sharing your knowledge Heather.

Love this post Heather! I completely agree!

We are all on this planet for a reason. Each of us has a specific set of gifts that we are meant to share with the world. Essentially, our dharma…and when we can align our lives with our dharma it becomes that much more peaceful and fulfilled.

    Thanks for this wonderful reminder!
